Gas leak emergency in a cupboard.

Smell Gas? What to Do Immediately – Your Guide from Daniel Emergency Plumbing

Gas safety isn’t something to take lightly. If you ever catch the smell of gas in your home that distinct sulphur or rotten egg-like scent, there’s no time to waste. A suspected gas leak can pose serious health and fire risks. Knowing what to do in those first few moments can protect you, your family, and your property.

Here’s what to do if you suspect a gas leak in your home:

Immediate Gas Leak Checklist

1. Don’t touch any switches
Avoid turning lights or appliances on or off. Don’t use phones or doorbells indoors. Even a small spark could ignite gas in the air.

2. Ventilate the property
Open all doors and windows to let gas escape. Clear airflow can reduce the risk of explosion.

3. Shut off the gas supply
If you know how, turn off the gas at the main isolation valve, usually located near the gas meter. Only do this if it’s safe and you know where the valve is.

4. Leave the building immediately
Don’t stay inside. Exit the property as quickly as possible, and make sure everyone is safe.

5. Call the National Gas Emergency Service
Once you’re at a safe distance, call 0800 111 999 right away. This is a free service and available 24/7 across the UK.
